It discovered ...Read moreSeabourn submersible trip discovers century old shipwreck - News & announcementsLuxury line Seabourn has made a historic discovery during one of its submersible trips. It discovered the wreck of a ship missing for more than a century earlier this week. The WW1 ship Titania sank off Alejandro Selkirk Island in Chile's Juan Fernández Archipelago in 1914. The discovery was made during a submersible experience from Seabourn Pursuit. “This discovery is nothing short of historic," said Robin West, vice president and general manager of expeditions at Seabourn. He said the ship is located 95 metres below the water. "Our submarine explorations often take our guests to places where no other human has ever explored. I am so incredibly proud of our expedition team for delivering this once-in-a-lifetime 'Seabourn Moment." The Seabourn team discovered the Titania about 4.25 nautical miles off the northwest coast of Selkirk with the help of a local fisherman. Titania was scuttled on November 19, 1914. Local fishermen occasionally found metal fragments in their lobster traps they believed belonged to the ship, but the wreck had never been officially located until now. It happened during one of Seabourn Pursuit's South Pacific voyages which traversed more than 4,000 miles between Melanesia, French Polynesia and San Antonio, Chile. The itineraries include Easter Island; visiting the Pitcairn island group and the remote Yasawa Islands of Fiji. Seabourn will offer similar deployments in 2025 featuring four voyages on Seabourn Pursuit: a pair of 20-day voyages departing March 18, 2025 from San Antonio, Chile to Papeete, Tahiti; and October 10, 2025 from Papeete to San Antonio. Also scheduled is an 18-day voyage from Papeete to Sydney departing April 7, 2025; and a 16-day Remote Shores of New Guinea & Indonesia departing April 24, 2025, from Sydney to Darwin. Seabourn Pursuit and sister ship, Seabourn Venture feature two custom-built submarines. Submarine experiences are available for an additional charge and are offered on select itineraries, including Seabourn Pursuit's South Pacific sailings between March and October 2025.Related News Stories:

The naming ceremony will take place on Seabourn Pursuit’s June 22-July 2, 2024 Kimberley cruise in Australia. Seabourn is the first cruise line to appoint Traditional Owners as godparents of a ship. It serves as a symbolic gesture of stewardship and responsibility toward the environment a as well as Seabourn’s commitment to sustainable tourism, the line says. “We believe no one can give a better blessing to our ship. When we visit local communities we are able to both celebrate their culture and drive positive sustainable change,” said Natalya Leahy, president of Seabourn. “When we set out to name the godparent for Seabourn Pursuit, we knew we wanted to do something that celebrates this special moment for the ship.” The Wunambal Gaambera people are the Traditional Owners of the region in the Kimberley that includes the sea country of Ngula Jar Island (Vansittart Bay) and Yirinni (Hunter River), and the freshwater country of Ngauwudu (Mitchell Plateau). Representatives from the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation will be at Ngula Jar Island on the Uunguu Coast to welcome the Seabourn Pursuit Kimberley cruise guests and to participate in the inaugural dedication ceremony. Seabourn will make a donation to assist Wunambal Gaambera to develop a self-sustaining industry, producing works of art and craft by Wunambal Gaambera artists to sell. In addition, Seabourn will also supply the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation with pearl shells and various art supplies and polishing materials for commercial arts and craft initiatives year-round. Seabourn intends to work with Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners to promote the Wanjina Wunggurr culture. “Seabourn’s contributions will assist us to create economic opportunities for our people,” said Catherine Goonack, Chairperson of the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation. Seabourn's monetary contribution, along with funding already received from Tourism Western Australia, will contribute to Wunambal Gaambera’s development of tourism facilities. Ngula Jar Island will be featured on all Seabourn Kimberley cruises, ensuring consistent visitation to Wunambal Gaambera Country. Seabourn’s newest purpose-built expedition ship, Seabourn Pursuit features 132 veranda suites. Each voyage offers exclusive experiences such as curated shore excursions, cultural tours, guided Zodiac cruises, hikes, nature walks, snorkeling and scuba diving.Related News Stories: Partner News - TravelMole
