London Transport Museum - About Us

London Transport Museum explores the powerful link between transport and the growth of London, its culture and society since 1800.

During a visit to the Museum based in the heart of Covent Garden in London, visitors will be able to see iconic vehicles, including Red Routemaster buses and London taxis. The Museum’s collection is Designated Outstanding by Arts Council England and includes more than 500,000 objects, from locomotives which powered the world’s first underground railway, to one of the most important collections of 20th century poster art.

As part of their visit, visitors will be able to enter the award-winning Hidden London exhibition, which reveals some of the ‘secret’ and disused parts of London’s Underground network. Learn about the history of many of these ‘forgotten’ stations and find out how many have been redeveloped for new purposes today.

Legacies: London Transport’s Caribbean Workforce is the newest exhibition to open at the Museum and revels the important contribution people of Caribbean heritage have made to transport in London and British culture more widely. Including accounts from first, second and third generation Caribbean people, this exhibition gives an honest look at the triumphs and struggles many individuals and their families faced when moving to the Capital.

A visit to the Museum would not be complete without visiting both the cafe-bar, Canteen, and the unique London Transport Museum Shop. During a visit to Canteen, you can choose from a delicious selection of hot and cold drinks and tasty treats, plus this is perfect place to sit and relax and take in some wonderful views overlooking the iconic Covent Garden Piazza. The London Transport Museum Shop is packed full of iconic london-transport related gifts including moquette socks in a box, beautiful poster art and popular toys and games.

Away from the Museum, for those individuals looking to try something totally different, book yourself on to a Hidden London tour of disused Tube stations and ‘forgotten’ sites. These exclusive tours reveal incredible stories from London’s past and transport visitors back to a by-gone era. Tours run throughout the year to a variety of locations including Piccadilly Circus, Clapham South deep-level shelter, Aldwych and Down Street station where Winston Churchill sheltered during the Blitz.

London Transport Museum named Visitor Attraction of the Year at the London Tourism Awards - News & announcements
We’re proud to announce that London Transport Museum has been named Visitor Attraction of the Year at the 2022 London Tourism Awards.   Hosted by London & Partners, the awards recognise, congratulate and celebrate businesses from across the Capital that deliver amazing experiences for visitors and champion innovation in the face of challenging times.   The accolade of Visitor Attraction of the Year celebrates London Transport Museum’s dedication to creating a memorable day out for all our visitors.
Sam Mullins OBE, London Transport Museum’s Director said:
We reopened post-lockdown more determined than ever to bounce back as one of the Capital’s top destinations for a great day out. Being named Visitor Attraction of the Year is a huge testament to the hard work of our team to make this a reality for our guests. In the face of the lockdowns and changing restrictions, we upgraded our galleries and introduced new programming to create engaging and relevant experiences for visitors returning to our Museum in Covent Garden and Depot in Acton Town, all whilst ensuring they felt welcome, reassured and safe.
London Transport Museum’s Front of House Team has also been shortlisted for the Visitor Welcome Award at this year’s Museum + Heritage Awards.

Remaining Covid rules to end in England this month - News & announcements
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he plans to end all remaining Covid restrictions in England earlier than planned. 'If the current encouraging trends in the data continue' the last restrictions will be removed a month earlie, Johnson said at PMQs. The restrictions were originally set to expire on 24 March. "It is my intention to return on the first day after the half-term recess to present our strategy for living with Covid," Johnson said. "It is my expectation that we will be able to end the last domestic restrictions - including the legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive - a full month early." Currently face coverings are required on London transport and fully vaccinated people with Covid can leave isolation after five days if they test negative two days in a row. Downing Street said the removal of isolating would be replaced by guidance, and it urged people not to go to the workplace if they are positive be Covid-19. Some unions and health experts slammed the move as 'too far, too soon.' The news will pile pressure on Scotland and Wales to follow suit.
