Quake warning in Santorini after hundreds of tremors

Santorini is on high alert after more than 200 tremors were recorded since the beginning of the weekend.

Authorities have warned people to avoid ports, not gather indoors and closed schools on Monday.

The civil protection ministry said 200 tremors were registered but doesn’t necessarily mean a large earthquake is imminent.

The largest tremors so far have measured about 4.8 magnitude.

However, it did call for precautionary measures including closing schools.

It is asking people to stay away from the island’s ports including Fira harbour where cruise ships tender offshore.

A government emergency meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was held at the weekend and has drawn up contingency plans should evacuations be required.

“We urge citizens to strictly adhere to safety recommendations to minimise risk,” the PM said.

Disaster response teams are on standby.

“This does not necessarily mean that there will be a strong earthquake, it may well be that the thermal energy dissipates and we have a smaller earthquake in Santorini. But we have to take measures,” said Costas Papazachos, a professor of seismology who is advising authorities.

As a precaution large tents have been set up in open areas.

Santorini is itself is a volcanic island formed by a huge eruption.

The UK Foreign Office issued an updated travel advisory:

“People are advised not to attend large indoors gatherings and to avoid old or abandoned buildings. The Greek Ministry advises people to avoid ports and to choose safe routes when travelling, particularly in areas where the landslide risk is high.”
